Creating One of a Kind Artwork

I was asked recently about my artistic process and “how do you think of subjects to paint and dream up your color palettes?”

I have to chuckle a little bit b/c for a long time I didn’t think I had one! I’m a bit all over the place creatively but now that I’ve been at this painting endeavor for a bit, it turns out I do have a method to my madness.

As far as how I think of “subjects” to paint….I give myself inspiration days where I will go and take photos or go through my own photos.

I always have my phone on me and if something strikes me as interesting I snap a pic of it. I’ve also been known to search google images, Pinterest, the Gram etc for things that are interesting to me at the moment (food, dish ware, tablescapes, beaches, people, etc.)

But, for a lot of my flower type paintings I make those up in my head LOL!

And as far as color palette goes, once I start a painting I have an idea of the color story I want to use (warm v cool colors) and lay them out and then add as needed to get exactly what I want….for me it is a very very intuitive process and I’m learning to trust my instincts with what colors to choose when….and then I save my palette and keep using it to paint a “series” using the same color story in different ways.

The series of littles I completed recently exemplifies my process of creating one of kind artwork. Hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed creating them!
