I'm Anne Temple, an abstract oil painter based in Norfolk, Virginia.

Color has always been how I make sense of the world. I'm drawn to the way certain colors live beside one another, the energy of an unexpected mark, and the quiet that comes from knowing when to leave something alone.

My paintings explore that balance—color and restraint, movement and stillness, lightness and depth. I want them to bring joy and personality into a space while still leaving room to breathe. The best paintings, to me, can do both.

I've been painting for more than a decade, largely self-taught and always led by curiosity. Oil paint remains my medium of choice because it asks me to slow down. I build my paintings in layers, working intuitively with color, texture and movement until I reach that moment when nothing else needs to be added. Ah. There it is.

Over the years, I've come to trust something else about my work: the right painting can make both people and spaces feel good. Not because life is always beautiful or easy, but because beauty, joy and humor have a meaningful place within the fullness of our lives.

That belief has become increasingly important to me. I'm interested in art not simply as something to fill a wall, but as part of how we create places that feel personal, inviting and alive—the homes and gathering spaces where real life unfolds.

My paintings are held in private collections and have found their way into homes, galleries and commercial spaces around the country. I'm grateful every time one leaves my studio and becomes part of someone else's story.
